Course Title: America Literature/Composition
Teacher: Mrs. Jane Yingling, [email protected]., (814) 944-4014, ext. 223.
Introduction/Brief Description of Course: Eleventh grade students will study the heritage of American literature from the Puritans to contemporary authors. Students will read various selections including short stories, poetry, drama and novels. Writing assignments will focus upon expository, analytic, and persuasive techniques.
Administering Course Requirements: Grades are determined by quizzes, exams, group and individual assignments, homework, formal and informal writings, presentations and class participation.
Class Participation is defined by the student actively engaging in the class. He/she does this by bringing necessary supplies to class, being attentive and hopefully asking and answering questions when appropriate.
Writing Assignments: These include journal writings, in and out of class expository/persuasive and analytical writing and speaking assignments, summaries of readings, essays, journal entries, book reviews, formal assignments including a 5 to 7 page research paper based upon a career shadow day experience.
Exams/Quizzes: Exams will ALWAYS be announced, but quizzes may or may not be announced.
Exam Failure Policy: If a student receives a grade of 68% or lower on an exam, the student may be able to either retake the exam or possibly do an extra assignment. This will need to be discussed with me within 24 hours of receiving the failing grade.
Homework: Assignments are given regularly and meant to provide students with methods to explore, examine, and evaluate ideas either presented in class or in their readings. Assignments not turned in on the due date are considered LATE!!!
Evaluation Progress: Each assignment will be given a pre-determined point value. Grades are determined by dividing the total points earned by the total points possible. Parents and students may access grades by logging onto Power School. Grades are updated as soon as possible after assignments are completed.
Books/Materials: McDougal Littell: American Literature Series and other supplemental materials.
