Course Title: British Literature/World Literature

Introduction/Brief Description of Course: Twelfth grade students will develop reading, writing, listening, speaking and thinking skills using various genres form World Literature. Students will read various short stories, novels, poems and will be able to form their own interpretations and opinions into discussions, essays, and presentations. Students will utilize discussion groups, essay writings, quizzes, homework assignments, activities and presentations to better understand and appreciate World Literature.
Administering Course Requirements: Grades are determined by quizzes, exams, group and individual assignments, homework, formal and informal writings, presentations and class participation.
Class Participation is defined by the student actively engaging in the class. He/she does this by bringing the necessary supplies to class, being attentive and hopefully asking and answering questions when appropriate.
Writing Assignments: These include journal writings in and out of class, informative/persuasive assignments, critical/analytical summaries of readings, essays, journal writings, book reviews, formal assignments including a seven to ten page research paper on a controversial topic of the students' choosing. Besides writing the paper, all students will also give an oral presentation to the class on their topic.
Exams/Quizzes: Exams will ALWAYS be announced but quizzes may or may not be.
Exam Failure Policy: If a student receives a grade of 68% or lower on an exam, the student may be able to either retake the exam or possibly do an extra assignment. This will need to be discussed with me within 24 hours of receiving the failing grade.
Homework: Assignments are given regularly and meant to provide students with methods to explore, examine and evaluate ideas either presented in class or in their readings. Assignments not turned in on their due dates are considered to be LATE.
Evaluation Progress: Each assignment will be given a pre-determined point value. Grades are determined by dividing the total points earned by the total points possible. Parents and students may access grades by logging unto Power School. Grades are recorded as soon as possible after assignments are completed.
Books/Materials: Elements of Literature: Essentials of British and World Literature, 6th Course, Holt series.
