Introduction/Brief Description of the course: Twelfth grade students will develop critical and analytical thinking skills as well as develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to the collegiate level. Composition work is developed through various writing forms including a 7 to 10 page research/literary critique.
Administering Course Requirements: Grades are determined by quizzes, exams, group and individual assignments, homework, formal and informal writings, presentations and class participation.
Class Participation is defined by the student actively engaging in the class. He/she does this by bringing necessary supplies to class, being attentive and hopefully asking and answering questions.
Writing Assignments: These include journal writings, in and out of class, informative/persuasive assignments, critical/analytical summaries of readings, essays, journal writings, book reviews, formal assignments including the research paper.
Exams/Quizzes: Exams will ALWAYS be announced, but quizzes may or may not be. Exams & quizzes must be taken in silence. Talking during an exam or quiz is grounds for failing the exam or quiz.
Exam Failure Policy: If a student receives a grade of 68% or lower on an exam, the student may be able to either retake the exam or possibly do an extra assignment. This will need to be discussed with me within 24 hours of receiving the failing grade.
Homework: Assignments are given regularly and meant to provide students with methods to explore, examine, and evaluate ideas either presented in class
or in their readings. Assignments not handed in on the due date are considered LATE!! If a student knows in advance that he/she will be absent, he/she should inform me of this absence in advance. Anytime a student is absent it is his/her responsibility to request missed work. Time will be provided for the student to finish the work according to the amount of days missed.
Evaluation progress: Each assignment will be given a predetermined point value. Grades are determined by dividing the total points earned by the total points possible. Parents and students can access grades by logging onto Power School. Grades are updated as soon as possible after assignments are completed.
Books/Materials: Perrine’s Literature: Structure, Sound & Sense by Thomas R. Arp. We will also use various short stories, novels, and plays.
Additional Information for the class: All assignments are due on the due date. An assignment is late if it is given to me any time after I collect it. All assignments will lose 10 points a day until the points have expired. At that point the grade is zero.
All formal writing assignments are expected to be typed. Please use times new roman style, 12 Font and I inch margins.
